-In
Uman there lived three Reform apostates, Chykeyl and his two sons in law,
Hirsh Ber and Landu.
-They held themselves to be very wise and greatly delved into philosophy.
They were completely irreligious and denied the existents of G-D.
-So great was their apostasy that they made a group vow, never to mention
the word G-D. The way of philosophy is one of calculations. One considers
all the sides then comes to a conclusion. One then takes the conclusion
and makes it into his opinion. However at a later point the person might
think of a side he had not considered before, he must then start the calculation
all over again.
-These three people were so confident in their calculations that there
was no G-D, that they decided it was a final conclusion. They therefore
made the vow, since mention of G-D might bring into their minds confusion,
which they already decided, doesn’t exist.
-When a rabbi would come to Uman these men would visit him. They would
mock him, ask him philosophical questions that had no answers, then they
used their power to kick him out of town.
-When Rabbi Nachman came to Uman they came to attack him, however they
were so impressed with his wisdom that they asked him to stay.
-These people held by a certain reform rabbi who wrote a book on philosophy.
Rabbi Nachman answered all issues found in the book.
-After Rabbi Nachman passed away these reform men said, had he lived a
little longer they surely would have repented and became religious.
